Mekura / Kiryu [R]

Kanji & Romaji: hiphopvomit
Translation: myself

Lyrics: Kurosaki Mahiro
Music: Kujou Takemasa

盲 [Mekura]
Blindness

Highly saturated dazzling (1) light
Sewed on one's eyelids
Slurping ennumeration of patches
Crawling and revolving tongue    Wriggled

Creaking skull is clamouring
Amber [colored] regurgitation (2)
Bent down body being covered in ashes
Needle-like footsteps are groaning

Black spots undermining as freckles are    Violating the beautiful view
A palm of hand held over one's head being    Eventually engulfed by the black sun    Burned one's inside of eyelids

Blearing (3) and rotting inside this blind purgatory
Shouting voice is becoming twisted in the loss sinking in crimson (4)
Hence the penetrating madness (5) from a scratched off pus

Bottomless depth

Highly saturated dazzling light
Sewing one's eyelids has stopped
Crawling to the inside of an eye socket
Displeasing tease of licking     Wet tongue

Peeling off color fades away     Being engulfed by the white darkness
Following contours too     Will be eventually interrupted    Ss the black rain (6) is spoiling (7) the image

Blearing and rotting inside this blind purgatory
Shouting voice is becoming twisted in the loss sinking in crimson
Blooming (tip of) tongue has fallen along with tomorrow['s day]

Voiceless sound

Eyelids in patches
Swollen (8) morning of the afternoon
In the dizziness split like a pomegranate
The brilliance of an outstretched hand is     Fading away into the gloom

Blearing and rotting inside this blind purgatory
In the dawn (9), waving hand's     Faraway shadow
Lingering, fragrant scent of left fingertips

Farewell (10) song

Even now "that" continues spoiling these eyes with an ease
One day, in this degenerated, gouged, mixed with bloody pus deathbed
A sound will reverberate an empty echo...

What to leave behind, where to head to

Footnotes:
  1. 眩む [kuramu] - as an archaism it can mean to become dark as well; Mahiro is fond of archaisms so I thought it could somewhat matter
  2. Regurgitation is a medical term describing an act of returning undigested food back up to the mouth without actual retch feeling; regurgitation sometimes involves blood
  3. Wordplay: 爛れる [here: tadareru] - to be bleary / to fester / to be inflamed written as 糜爛れる; 糜爛 [biran] actually means erosion of skin and/or mucus membranes
  4. Wordplay: 紅れ [kure] in 紅れ没む [kureshizumu] derives from 紅 [kurenai] - crimson; there's also an actual verb 暮れる [kureru] which means inter alia to get darkto come to an endto be sunkto be lost; 没む [shizumu] - to drown / to sink, but 没 alone stands for death / discard
  5. Wordplay: 狂う滲み [kuruushimi] - penetrating madness sounds like 苦しみ [kurushimi] - pain / distress / suffering
  6. Wordplay: 黒雨 [kokuu] - black rain (a made up word) sounds like 虚空 [kokuu] - empty space/sky
  7. 花腐す [hana kutasu] - actually something like flower decay
  8. Wordplay: 腫れる [hareru] - to swell written as 腫瘍れる where 腫瘍 [shuyou] stands for tumor / neoplasm
  9. Wordplay: 鏡花水月 [kyoukasuigetsu] - lit. flowers reflected on a mirror and the moon reflected on the water's surface, referring to something that is visible, but one cannot touch it or reach it, written as 暁歌水月 - a song sung in the dawn and the moon reflected on the water's surface, but actually sung as 暁 [akatsuki] - dawn; such motif was used on Kiryu's previous album Kyoukasuigetsu (暁歌水月); the song with the same title is about keeping following one's dreams regardless of circumstances
  10. Kind of wordplay: 別離 [betsuri] - separation / parting sung as 別れ [wakare] which means not only separation / parting, but also farewell

Discussion:

I just noticed... Kanji 盲 [mekura] - blindness consists of two separate characters: 亡 meaning dying / deceased and 目 standing for eyes placed one over another. Deceased eyes. Makes sense, doesn't it? But what if we referred to it as dying on one's eyes?

Well, this song is about tortures -  dying on somebody's else eyes. Written from that dying person point of view. At least I suspect so. However the cause of death...

Another thing - lyrics' aforementioned pomegranate. Considered a symbol of fertility (due to its lots of seeds) is also a reference to forbidden desire and demonic temptation. Hence, I would assume, the possible cause of death was... A rape? A really brutal one, that is. Considering Mekura was commited by Mahiro, this idea does not seem however far-fetched since he already included rape in his songs (followed by incest, to make things more amusing).

Decipering all that was certainly difficult, huh.

  2. Not so long ago I read that Mahiro has nyctalopia. It means that this song is very personal for Mahiro since there are his thouths and feelings about his disease.

    1. Retinitis pigmentosa to be more specific. Nyctalopia is one of its symptoms/repercussions. C:
